Police make a scene safe. You treat the people in it. Each service does its own job.
- Police decide when a scene is safe to enter. You decide who is treated first and whether a patient goes to hospital.
- An officer may stay with a patient who is under arrest. The officer may not delay treatment to ask questions.
- Touch as little as you can at a crime scene. If you remove something from a patient that police will want, such as a round, say so to the officer in charge.
- A medic answering a call is not there to be a robbery crew’s hostage. Hostages have to be people who are part of the scene and willing to play it (§4.5).
EMS-9.1 Injured first, paperwork second.
If police bring you an injured suspect, treatment comes before processing. Tell the officer when the patient is fit to go.
