Evidence and warrants

Section11

What leaves evidence

EvidenceWhere it comes from
BloodLeft where anyone is injured. A blood splatter shows on the ground.
Shell casingsLeft wherever a gun is fired, by anyone, police included. The taser leaves none.
FingerprintsLeft on a vehicle’s steering wheel by whoever drove it. Lift them with the UV light.

Evidence disappears after 5 minutes. Get to the scene and collect it fast.

At a crime scene

  1. Make the scene safe and get EMS to anyone who is hurt. Keep people out of it.
  2. Find. Equip your flashlight and hold aim. Evidence markers show up within 15 metres.
  3. Collect. Walk right up to a marker (within 1 metre) and press E: “Collect Evidence”. You can carry 5 pieces at a time.
  4. Vehicle prints. Sit in the vehicle and use your UV light. You will see “Prints Collected” or “No Prints Found”.
  5. Analyze. Take everything to the crime lab at Mission Row: “Analyze Evidence” (about 6 seconds). Each piece becomes a numbered evidence report.
  6. Identify. At the station’s fingerprint station, use “Take Suspect’s Fingerprints” on the person. Once someone’s prints are on file, their name appears on matching bullet and fingerprint reports. Until then they show “Unknown”.
  7. Store. “Access Evidence Storage” opens every analyzed report. Only boss ranks can delete reports.

What is in an evidence report

ReportShowsUse it for
BloodName, location, date, time, crime labWho was hurt, and where
BulletName, bullet type (pistol, submachine gun, shotgun, assault rifle, light machine gun, sniper, heavy weapon), location, date, time, crime labWho fired, with what kind of gun, and where
FingerprintName, licence plate, location, date, time, crime labWho drove a vehicle

Handle every report as roleplay evidence: note the report number, the time, and who collected it. When you are done, file it in evidence storage.

Warrants

A warrant is permission from a judge. An arrest warrant lets you arrest a named person. A search warrant lets you search a named home, warehouse or vehicle.

  1. Write the request in the MDT: who or what, and the evidence that supports it.
  2. A Lieutenant or above checks it.
  3. A judge signs it or refuses it.
  4. Serve it. Bring a copy, say what it is, and search only what it names.

The path of a warrant.

LEO-11.1 Every item has a trail.

From the scene to the locker, the report shows who held each piece of evidence. Evidence without a trail is not used.

LEO-11.2 No warrant, no entry.

You enter a home or a warehouse without a warrant only when you are chasing a suspect who ran inside, or when someone inside is in immediate danger.
